Have you ever experienced low back pain? When LBP strikes it is hard to know what to do or how to become pain free again. Clinical Myotherapist Daniel Bishop explains some key facts about low back pain.

LBP at any stage of life is inconvenient! There are multiple forms of LBP so it is always a good idea to seek professional advice to see exactly what treatment and exercises are going to be right for you.

Mechanical LBP usually has a pattern. By this I mean there are clear aggravating movements and clear relieving factors. Overtime this type of back pain, if left untreated, usually gets worse and become more persistent. We see lots of this type of back pain in the clinic and luckily it is very treatable with some myofascial release, home exercises and education about better biomechanics of the body even if you have been given a diagnosis of disc degeneration or disc bulge there is usually some postural change we can make to reduce the pain and symptoms.

A recent case of this was Dean (name changed for privacy reasons). He came in with scans which showed varying minor changes in his back and a story of repeatedly being told his back was ‘unstable’. I explained that the scans don’t always reveal the true cause of pain and rarely are backs truly unstable. I asked for his story of events surrounding his pain. He told me his story which gave me much better information than the scan results did. His story showed a pattern which we were then able to assess. We were able to continually create and relieve the pain by doing a different movement with the body and from there we knew what postural change needed to take place, and what exercises needed to be prescribed. We did some treatment to help alleviate the immediate symptoms but thoroughly explained that it’s what is done outside of the treatment room that helps long term. He walked out of the session pain free, very happy and with a plan.

In treating LBP we don’t only consider the body but sometimes we need to consider factors such as stress, subconscious gains, we consider lifestyle choices such as poor diet or lack of general exercise, there are all sorts of things that we are trained to think of that a patient may not be aware of. I sound like a broken record but again, that is why it is always best to seek professional advice.
